Just a few notes…

pencil2 I am in the process of developing a new sketchbook artist website.

There are some great websites out there. What’s been done and what can be a fresh twist on this subject, well that’s the question. On my favorite websites what I like best is;

As is this website, WordPress is my first choice in delivering the package. With its dependability, ease and gazillion plugins, it is the best and I am confident it will be the top dog for at least a few years to come.

Got some suggestions about what you would like to see on an artists’ sketchbook website?  Send them along, I’d love to hear from you.

Sketch/Watercolor of Mission Mill

This Mission Mill sketch/watercolor was done a bit ago, but I had not posted it here. It is my second  watercolor and was viewed from the east end of the warehouse looking to the northwest. This motif view is one of my favorites and moving only a foot or two changes the buildings’ relationships drastically. On another note this is the first time I used a pencil at arms length to get my angles and sizes. Obviously, I need a lot of practice, but this technique is very beneficial.

Loxley Watercolor Palette

Winsor Newton Half Pan Colors (Click Image)

Rearranged my things with a new Loxley’s palette. Certainly this will go through an adjustment period.  I filled the center compartment with color and will have to put the travel brushes in another part of the kit. Here’s a list of the colors I have placed in the new Loxley 16 palette.

New Gambose, Cad Yellow, Cad Red, Quin Red, Winsor Red, Alizaron Crimson, Winsor Yellow, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, Payne’s Grey, Chinese White, Black, Rose, Violet, Cerulean Blue, Winsor Blue GS, French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Winsor Green BS, Sap Green, Olive Green, Green Gold.

The Loxley Palette which I ordered from Ken Bromley arrived in about 6 days. Unlike some American retailers, these people want my business. An unfortunate recent order took the American artist’s supplier 4 days just to get it on the truck, and then another 7 days transit. The cost of freight was more expensive than the Royal Mail and the package was lighter.  I got a better price, too.

Sorry about the rant, the Loxley is more substantial than other palettes. It is short and stout. The lid is deeply dished and when cleaning up the paint wipes out more easily. The Loxley is indeed heavy weight and I expect a lot of life out of it. From Bromley’s it will set you back about $30, compare that to US suppliers and see how the value is overseas.

In this order with Bromley’s I received two more of the Edding pens (love them) a white opaque gel pen, and a black and brown Zig artist’s pen. (they bleed right through the moleskine paper)

I set up my old stamper and and gold stamped my name into the sketchbook. The Pen and Ink cover is soft and the letters really sink in, the Moleskine is a much harder cover and as seen in the photo at the left leaves a nice impression. Click on the photos to view better.

Vroom..Vroom

This sketchbook entry is a tribute to a car show that came to Mission Mill a week ago Saturday. One of the coordinators owned this and we talked a bit about cars. His restored Fairlane 500 and my checker cab in 1600 pieces.

I am just using the pen and have not initially done this in pencil. I am using the micron 005 for the sketch and a waterbrush with W/N artist colors. The Pen and Ink sketchbook takes the color but is a bit more absorbtive thru than my moleskine.

Though I am NOT a Ford guy (Chevy, Checker) this car looked like a sweet ride. The coordinator’s buddy brought his Mustang and I got a grill shot of it. I may attempt that soon and post it, too.

Watercolor/Sketch Kit

My Walkaround Sketch/Watercolor Kit

My Walkaround Sketch/Watercolor Kit. Click Image for Blowup

Here’ the current kit. Actually, in the watercolor palette are two Isabey travel #4 and #6 brushes with a Niji waterbrush and dirty folded paper towel.  The half pans are W/N artists colors from Bromley’s. I want more! BTW, the palette is starting to looked messy and loved.

My two dollar pencil box has a g-2 pen, staedtler clutch pencil, two waterbrushes, a cheap bic black ballpoint pen, 2 edding pens 01 & 05, eagle sketch pencil, pencil sharpener, eraser w/ clutch pencil sharpener, Lamy med. point with black noodlers ink, pigma micron 03, and a 6 inch stainless ruler.   Arriving any day from cheapjoes (real slow to ship, I won’t link) is a 3×0 rapidograph with ultradraw ink, it will make the pencil box stuffed, something may have to go.

I have switched from my  small ruled portrait moleskeine to a small landscape “pen and ink” buff plain paper sketchbook. I also sewed a simple 16 page single section book with arches 140# cold pressed paper.

This is by no means super lean and portable, but I keep it in my briefcase with my laptop and canon g9 camera. This total outfit can keep me happy just about anywhere.

Salt & Pepper

This was a quickie for an anniversary card.  It’s our 21st.  So, I opened my never tried masking pen and proceeded to wreck yet another brush!  It was fun though because I kept over-doing the pigment and in desperation I used a paper towel to sop up and manipulate excess color. (which is a cool technique itself)

I’ve noticed my scans punch the color. I like this result, but think that I need to intensify the original by having more umph there.  Now I have to remember how to hyperlink this to lightbox 2 to allow it to be moused over BIG.

Jason Lee House at Mission Mill

Jason Lee House

Jason Lee House at Mission Mill. Click Image for Blowup

This is my fourth watercolor. It was sketched on Saturday, April 11th for Sketchcrawl 22 and watercolored today. I have no idea what I am doing, but realized I had never looked at a fir tree so closely in thirty two years of living in the Northwest.  Sketching and watercolor has caused me to see light and detail from a totally new perspective.

Also, don’t leave a brush sitting in the water container!  My new Isabey Travel brush had a decided curve  when pulled from the water.  Later when reading an art book there was a note of caution that stated to never leave brushes in the water as it may cause them to loose their form.  I had better learn quickly or I’ll be replacing my materials and tools because of my ignorance. As a side, a watercolorist friend had seen my bookbinder brushes sitting elbow deep in water and mentioned to me they may prematurely rot. I laughed and said they had better hurry, they’ve been in water for over 12 years. To boot, the container has been left to dry out completely with the brushes welded in place several times. My bookbinder brushes are fine, but I will have to develop better habits with my watercolor brushes.
